Borghetto Vara is gesticht in 1274, hoewel reeds in 881 sprake was van een bewoond gebied rondom het hof van
Accola. Het uitgestrekte gebied van
Borghetto reikte tot de kust van
Levanto en behoorde tot het klooster van
Brugnato.
Het dorp werd gebouwd in het dal, aan de oude "
Via Aurelia" wat, gedurende de middeleeuwen, de belangrijkste verbindingsweg was. Door haar strategische positie, werd
Borghetto een belangrijke rustplaats voor reizigers en pelgrims en haar invloed werd elke dag sterker. In de veertiende eeuw, werd
Borghetto gekozen als de eerste halte van de postkoets, na
La Spezia, en werd gebruikt voor het wisslen van de paarden en post. Dankzij deze functie, bezochten bekende mensen zoals
Giuseppe Mazzini, Vincenzo Gioberti, Richard Wagner, Victor Emmanuel II van Savoy, Theodore Roosevelt en Guglielmo Marconi deze plaats.
Er zijn heden nog weinig overblijfselen uit die tijd bewaard gebleven, dit vanwege de schade welke de 2e wereldoorlog ook hier heeft aangericht.
Borghetto is heden een karakteristiek en rustig dorpje in de prachtige
Vara vallei, omgeven door groene heuvels.
Door haar gunstige ligging ten opzichte van de snelweg en (nog steeds) de
Via Aurelia, is het zeer geschikt als uitvalsbasis voor prachtige dagtochten door de
Vara vallei of naar de
Cinque Terre.

Borghetto Vara was founded in 1274 even if already in 881 mention was made to a first inhabited area, gathered around the court of
Accola. The vast territory of
Borghetto reached the coast of
Levanto and belonged to the monastery of
Brugnato.
The village rises on the valley bottom, on the ancient
Via Aurelia (Aurelia Road) that, during the Middle Ages, represented the main road. Due to its strategic position, the
Borghetto became an important stop-over place for wayfarers and pilgrims and its importance grew everyday more. In the fourteenth century, it was chosen as the first station of the stage-coaches, second to
La Spezia, and was used for horse change and for mail service. Thanks to this function, famous people transited here and among these
Giuseppe Mazzini, Vincenzo Gioberti, Richard Wagner, Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, Theodore Roosevelt and Guglielmo Marconi. Only few evidences of the historical events of
Borghetto Vara remain due to the damages suffered during the World War. Today, the small village is characterised as a tranquil and gathered centre of the middle Valley of
Vara, surrounded by green hills and cultivated fields.
